We get this question all the time, so let’s talk about it. The short answer is it depends on the material of the retainer.
- Glass is very safe and non porous, so you can wear that forever.
- PFTE and implant grade silicone retainers are non porous and can be worn long term. As with any piercing, you do have to clean and maintain it.
- For acrylics or bioflex retainers, those should only be worn short term.
Everyone is different, so keep an eye on the piercing and if there’s any irritation, take the retainer out.
