How to Use a Bodyartforms Gauge Card To Measure Your Jewelry

If you have piercings, you know how important it is to know your jewelry measurements so you can shop for new pieces. Today, we'll be showing you how to measure the most common types of body jewelry using our handy gauge card.

Measuring Plugs or Tunnels

Let's start with plugs or tunnels. The two measurements you need to know are the gauge and wearable length.

  • Gauge: This is the thickness of the plug across the middle. Use the bubbles on the gauge card to find the correct size. For example, a 5/8” plug (16mm) fits perfectly behind the 5/8” bubble on the card. In the image below the gauge is 5/8 inches (5/8").
  • Wearable Length: This is the area that goes through your piercing. For a single flare plug, measure from where one flare starts to where the O-ring starts. For double flare plugs, measure straight across between the flares. Use the ruler on the gauge card for this measurement. In the images below, the single flare warebale length is 8.5mm and the double flare has a 7mm warebale length.

Measuring Rings

This includes clicker rings, seamless rings, segment rings, and captive bead rings. You'll need to know the gauge and diameter.

  • Gauge: Measure the thickness of the ring using the bubbles on the gauge card. In the image below the gauge is an 8 gauge (8g).
  • Diameter: Measure directly across the inside center of the ring using the ruler on the gauge card. In the image below the diameter is 1/2 inch (1/2").

For circular barbells and nose hoops, measure the diameter across the widest point, always measuring the inside of the jewelry. In the image below, the circular barbell's diameter is a 1/2 inch (1/2").

Measuring Curved Barbells

This includes regular curved barbells and belly ring jewelry.

  • Gauge: Measure the thickness of the ring using the bubbles on the gauge card. In the image below the gauge is a 6 gauge (6g).
  • Length: Measure directly across the post between the ends, not including the ends. Use the ruler on the gauge card for this measurement. In the image below the length is 3/4 of an inch (3/4").

Measuring Straight Body Jewelry

This includes labrets and straight barbells.

  • Gauge: Measure the thickness of the post using the bubbles on the gauge card. In the image below the gauge is 14 gauge (14g).
  • Length: Measure directly across the post between the ends, lining it up at zero on the gauge card. In the image below the length is 1 inch (1").
